5. United States

Installed Wind Power Capacity (MW) 2022: 140,862

Share of Wind Power as Total Consumption: 13.1%

Final Score: 9.5

The US Department of Energy has shown that the United States holds one of the top positions when classifying wind power by country in 2023. It is one of the region’s fastest-growing and lowest-cost sources of electricity and is poised for rapid growth.

According to new reports, wind power accounted for 22% of new electricity capacity installed in the United States in 2022, second only to solar, representing $12 billion in capital investment and employing more than 125,000 Americans.

4. Denmark

Installed Wind Power Capacity (MW) 2022: 7,088

Share of Wind Power as Total Consumption: 55%

Final Score: 9

GlobalData has revealed that wind power accounted for 44% of Denmark’s total installed electricity generation capacity and 50% of total electricity generation in 2021. Meanwhile, installed capacity has been forecasted to consistently rise from 2022 to 2035, at which point wind power is expected to stand at 53% of total installed generation capacity.

3. United Kingdom

Installed Wind Power Capacity (MW) 2022: 28,537

Share of Wind Power as Total Consumption: 25.2%

Final Score: 6.5

In 2023, offshore wind power accounts for around 13% of the United Kingdom’s electricity mix. The country also has around 12.7 gigawatts (GW) of connected offshore wind energy capacity spread across 44 wind farms with over 2,500 turbines. In 2021, the UK installed over 2.3 GW of new offshore wind capacity, which made up 70% of all new offshore wind installations in Europe that year.

2. Spain

Installed Wind Power Capacity (MW) 2022: 29,308

Share of Wind Power as Total Consumption: 32.9%

Final Score: 4

According to the Spanish Wind Energy Association, wind power was the leading source of electricity generation in Spain in 2021, with 28,139 MW of installed capacity and meeting over 23% of electricity demand. Furthermore, over 21,500 wind turbines in the country generated 60,485 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of wind power in 2021, a 10% increase from 2020.

1. Germany

Installed Wind Power Capacity (MW) 2022: 66,315

Share of Wind Power as Total Consumption: 28.8%

Final Score: 4

When classifying wind power by country in 2023, Germany stands at the top due to its high capacity for renewable energy. In the first half of 2023, Germany installed 60% more onshore wind capacity than in the same period in 2022, for a total of 1,565 megawatts (MW).
