A Union Board Member Sparks Speculation About Southwest’s Plans

On Feb. 14, Chris Click, a member of the board of LUV’s flight attendants’ union, soon after a board meeting asked readers of his Facebook page to respond to an online poll that asked “Who Is SWA Eyeing as a Potential Purchase or Merger?” Above that question, Click wrote “All this Merger talk. Who do you think we are looking at?”

Among the choices were JetBlue, Frontier, and Allegiant (ALGT). JBLU was the top choice of respondents at one point with 51% of the vote.

Click on Feb. 13 had posted “Just wrapped up the February Executive Board meeting. Several important initiatives and issues discussed. Keep an eye out for those communications. ” He added, ” Lots of stuff on the horizon.”

More Information About Southwest and JetBlue

In October, LUV made a deal with Elliott Investment Management in order to prevent Elliott from waging a proxy fight against it. Under the agreement, Elliott named six members of LUV’s 13-member board. Traditionally, activist investors are not very fond of acquisitions.

In the last month, JBLU has fallen 2.3%, but it has climbed 17% in the last three months.
