5. Mexico

Distilled Spirits Exports: $106.67 million

Wine Exports: $29.6 million

Beer Exports: $24.65 million

Total Alcohol Exports in 2022: $160.92 million

Mexico is a country with lots of local options for alcoholic beverages – mainly tequila and beer – but Mexicans are increasingly consuming more wine and are open to incorporating beverages from diverse origins. From 2010 to 2019, imports of alcoholic beverages grew 107%, going from $440 billion to $909 billion. After the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the substantially lower prices of American wines and the increased demand for wines among Mexicans has given U.S. wine producers a very attractive market in Mexico.

Mexico is the Country that Exports the Most Alcohol to America. The southern neighbor also became the Top Trading Partner of the U.S. in the beginning of 2023, with total bilateral trade between the two countries totaling $263 billion during the first four months of this year.

4. Netherlands

Distilled Spirits Exports: $171.43 million

Wine Exports: $17.42 million

Beer Exports: $5.68 million

Total Alcohol Exports in 2022: $194.53 million

The demand for American whiskey has exploded in the windmill land over the last few years. In 2019, the Netherlands imported $28 million of U.S. whiskey, while in 2022, this number went all the way up to $151 million. The Netherlands was the largest export market for American distilled spirits in Europe last year.

3. Japan

Distilled Spirits Exports: $112.93 million

Wine Exports: $109.33 million

Beer Exports: $9.63 million

Total Alcohol Exports in 2022: $231.89 million

While Japan has its own domestic vineyards and wineries, it is safe to say that imported wine is very popular. The Land of the Rising Sun is a premium wine market for the United States, where U.S. wine brands are favored for their innovation, desirable flavor profile, sweetness, and high alcohol content.

Japan also recently became the 44th country to officially recognize ‘Bourbon’ and ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ as distinctive products of the United States and the country ranks as the top export market for American whiskeys

2. United Kingdom

Distilled Spirits Exports: $159.7 million

Wine Exports: $173.23 million

Beer Exports: $6.2 million

Total Alcohol Exports in 2022: $339.13 million

U.S. spirits exports to the U.K. grew by 28% in 2022, to $159.7 million. While American whiskey exports made up $112 million of this figure, exports of Bourbon, single malt, and rye whiskies to the U.K. remained below the pre-tariff level of $149 million recorded in 2017.

American wine is also a staple in the U.K. supermarkets, but it’s usually only the top brands that make their way onto the shelves. With Brexit opening the doors for new trade deals, lesser-known American wines are also rising to prominence.

1. Canada

Distilled Spirits Exports: $270.85 million

Wine Exports: $507.01 million

Beer Exports: $83.32 million

Total Alcohol Exports in 2022: $861.18 million

The United States sells more wine to Canada than to any other country. Even though Canada has only about a tenth of the population compared to the E.U., America exports almost as much wine to Canada as to Europe. Although most Canadians do not buy imported wines from grocery stores, American producers and their trade associations, led by The Wine Institute, have lobbied strongly for the elimination of the discrimination. The Great White North is also the largest export market for American craft beer

Canada is the Largest Importer of American Alcohol in the World
