Ancient Greeks used this plant to make perfumes, old Chinese as a medical plant, and it still has a variety of uses up to the present times. Today it is mostly used as a culinary spice and as coloring for clothes. Apart from the great specter of uses, saffron still remains an expensive ingredient. Great idea for growing large amounts of saffron in the greenhouse is growing it hydroponically. But, although the saffron price can get as high as $1500 (and for rare varieties up to $10,000) about 75,000 blossoms are needed for that amount.
