5. South Korea

South Korea has an annual number of 148,857 graduates in engineering/manufacturing/construction. The country is also renowned for its highly advanced technology companies like Samsung, LG, and Hyundai, which offer outstanding opportunities for engineering professionals. Moreover, the country’s focus on innovation is evident through initiatives like the Korean New Deal, a massive government investment plan to foster green and digital technologies. It is one of the best countries for engineering in the world.

4. Japan

Japan’s education ministry will allocate ¥300 billion ($2.1 billion) to support 111 universities and technical colleges, aiming to improve science education, particularly in green and digital technologies. The decision seeks to boost Japan’s global standing in science and technology research. A ministry report noted Japan’s fall to 12th in highly-cited scientific papers, down from fourth in the early 2000s. Currently, 35% of Japanese students graduate in STEM fields. 

Japan has an annual number of 168,214 graduates in engineering/manufacturing/construction.

3. Iran

Iran is a global powerhouse in engineering education, with the third-highest production of engineers worldwide, with a 70% of graduates being women. In 2016, the country held the fifth position in the number of STEM graduates, reaching 335,000. It is also worth mentioning that Iran has the world’s highest female-to-male ratio in primary education enrollment, with a ratio of 1.22 girls to every boy. Demonstrating a commitment to education, Iran allocates 20% of government spending and 5% of its GDP to this sector, surpassing many developing countries. Of this, 50% focuses on secondary education, and 21% support tertiary education annually.

2. United States

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were approximately 2 million engineers in the U.S. workforce in 2018. The median annual salary of engineers in the US is $94,600 for engineers, $55,920 for engineering technicians, and $90,270 for computational professionals in 2018. Gender and racial diversity remain low, though the computing sector shows the highest percentage of women (24%). The engineering technology field exhibits the highest representation of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (21%). The demand for skilled engineering professionals is high, with transferable skills to other science and tech sectors. 

According to UNESCO statistics, the United States has an annual number of 237,826 engineering/manufacturing/construction graduates.

Russian Federation is the country with the highest number of engineering graduates in the world per World Atlas.

Two of the top engineering universities in Russia are Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU). Moreover, important engineering companies in Russia are Rosatom that specializes in nuclear energy, and Rostec, a state corporation involved in different high-tech industries like aerospace and electronics.
