Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic nation, is composed of 17,504 islands. The marine and inland capture fisheries, along with aquaculture, play a pivotal role in the country’s economy and food security. In 2021, fishing contributed 2.777% to Indonesia’s GDP, with an availability of 35.26 kg of fish per capita for consumption, according to Ocean Treasure.

In 2017, Indonesia produced approximately 23.19 million tons ($27.27 billion) of fish, with 7.07 million tons (US$ 14.04 billion) sourced from capture fisheries and 16.11 million tons ($13.24 billion) from aquaculture. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, fisheries exports from the country amounted to $7.2 billion in 2020.
