8. Spain

Spain ranks second in the European Union in terms of beer production, with 41.1 million hectoliters. There are three main companies that account for most of the brewing in the country – Heineken N.V., Mahou San-Miguel, and Damm. These companies collectively boast a market share of 80% in Spain. 

7. Japan

Beer in Japan mostly comes from the country’s four major breweries – Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo, and Suntory. Sapporo Premium is among the most popular lager beers in the country.

The brand also plans on starting production in the U.S. in the fall of this year. Sapporo Holdings Ltd. announced a revenue of $3.44 billion in 2022, up 9.4% from the previous year.

Carlsberg holds a 27% share of the Russian market through its ownership of the country’s largest brewer, Baltika. The Danish company sought a full disposal of their business in Russia after the country’s aggression in Ukraine, however, it has been reported that the Russian state has taken control of the Carlsberg’s stake in Baltika effective immediately, according to a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin on the 16th of July 2023.

5. Germany

Beer is so integral to German culture that the country even came up with its own purity law as far back as 500 years ago. Bitburger is the third best-selling beer brand in Germany. Bitburger Brewery Group reported a revenue of $818.2 million in 2022, an increase of 15% from the previous year.

4. Mexico

3. Brazil

The importance of the brewing sector is increasing rapidly in the Brazilian economy and MAPA –  the Brazilian Ministry for Livestock Farming and Supply –  created the “Sectorial Chamber for Beer” in 2019 to support the sector. 

Owned by the Carlsberg group, Skol is a popular beer brand in Brazil. The brand value of Skol grew to approximately $3.83 billion in 2022. 

2. United States of America

America’s beer sector has been flourishing for a few decades now and there were 9,709 breweries operating in the country in 2022 – the highest figures ever in history. 

The country’s beer industry supported more than 2.4 million local jobs last year, and contributed around $409 billion to the national economy – equivalent to 1.6% of GDP. The industry also paid more than $132 billion in wages and contributed $63.8 billion in taxes to the national exchequer.

China’s beer industry is the fastest growing in the world, with total revenue projected to reach $131.5 billion by the end of this year. However, the market is facing some challenges, such as the overcapacity of beer mass production and decreasing domestic beer consumption.
