All those working in the movie industry know how volatile this particular niche is and how easily can a high-budget movie can go down at the box office. Today, we would like to present you with a list we have compiled of the top 6 worst grossing movies in 2013. Although we’ve seen our fair share of box office hits in 2013, the number of movies that have bombed out in the past year is quite impressive. Most of the movies on our countdown didn’t even manage to break even. Curious to see which flicks we’re talking about? Let’s take a look at the countdown.
No. 6: Ender’s Game
Studio: Lionsgate & Summit
Estimated budget: $110 million
Gross (worldwide): $87.9 million
For a book that gathered millions of fans worldwide, the movie was nothing short of an utter disappointment. So what stopped Ender’s Game from becoming as loved on the screen as it was on paper? Well, as Orson Scott Card (the author of Ender’s Game) put it, the book was simply not made to be turned into a movie. Spoiler: this is not the only Harrison Ford movie that flopped this year. Keep reading.
No. 5: Paranoia
Studio: Relativity
Estimated budget: $35 million
Gross (worldwide): $13.8 million
You would expect that a movie starring Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford would be a big hit. Well, this was not the case when Paranoia hit the theaters. It only managed to gross $3.5 million in its opening weekend, coming to a total of $13.8 million worldwide.
No. 4: Oldboy
Studio: Film District
Estimated budget: $35 million
Gross (worldwide): $4 million
Remakes are quite a gamble for movie studios: they can either reach overwhelming success or completely fizzle out at the box office. We’ll let you guess in which of this 2 categories Oldboy fits. The accusations that director Spike Lee stole the poster for the movie from an unpaid designer didn’t help the movie either.
No. 3: Bullet to the Head
Studio: Warner Bros.
Estimated budget: $55 million
Gross (worldwide): $9.5 million
Never heard of Bullet to the Head? Don’t worry, as judging by the ticket sales it generated worldwide, not many people did. Thanks to this box office flop, Sylvester Stallone managed to set a new record: his worst grossing movie since 2000.
No. 2: R.I.P.D
Studio: Universal
Estimated budget: $130 million
Gross (worldwide): $78.3 million
July was a particularly low month for Ryan Reynolds who saw both of his movies flop at the box office – R.I.P.D and Turbo. However, Universal shouldn’t be terribly disappointed by R.I.P.D’s performance, as it did have two of the highest grossing movies of the year – Fast and Furious 6 and Despicable Me 2.
No. 1: The Lone Ranger
Studio: Disney
Estimated budget: $250 million
Gross (worldwide): $260 million
If we were to judge by grossing figures alone, one would say that the Lone Ranger fared pretty well. Well, not exactly, as it barely managed to surpass its budget. Not to mention that it is somewhat disappointing to see Johnny Depp star in a movie that was so poorly received by critics and the public alike.
