Top 5 Biggest Celebrity Stoners: As marijuana has come closer to legalization, many celebrities have been more open in talking about their usage of the plant, for various reasons. Not only can they feel more comfortable admitting their usage of the drug, they may even feel their doing so can help bring greater awareness to the push for legal marijuana throughout the US and even other parts of the world.
We recently listed the 10 states with the highest substance abuse rates crippling their populace, and these celebrities definitely wouldn’t consider their smoking habits as being influential to those rankings. So, how they’ve interacted with the media on this topic matters.
In terms of making the list, other factors that go into it include their overall fame, how much their status as a celebrity pot smoker helped or hurt their careers, and overall media surrounding their involvement with it. I understand that this may exclude people from this list that may smoke more weed than anybody on this list, yet nobody is aware of it; obviously not all people brag about or even discuss whether or not they partake.
But to really be considered one of the biggest celebrity stoners, you have to at least partially embrace it, and have it be a part of your brand and image. If you disagree than go read another list! Just kidding. Seriously, please don’t.
Now, lets take a look at the biggest celebrity stoners, beginning with perhaps a couple of unexpected choices:
5. Morgan Freeman
Freeman has admitted in the past to using drugs of all sorts, but as he’s aged so has his palette. He recently discussed how he’s stopped using substances altogether, except for marijuana. He even went as far as referring to it as “God’s own weed,” and also said that he gains energy and inspiration from smoking, as well as that it calms him and helps him act. The combination of it helping his career with his quote linking weed to God makes Morgan Freeman one of the biggest celebrity stoners.
4. Stephen King
This famous novelist has long been an advocate for marijuana legalization and usage, as his interviews on the topic date all the way back to 1981. He claimed, like Freeman and others to come, to gain creativity from smoking, and whether you believe him or not, his books have sold over 350 million copies. He has talked about the legalization issue head-on, stating “I think it should not only be legal, but be a cottage industry…,” and then discussed his frequent use of medical cannabis as well.
3. Snoop Dogg
Probably the most commonly associated name with weed, Snoop Dogg has never been shy about his smoking tendencies. He’s gotten high on multiple live interviews, discussed it at length in songs and movies, and launched his own vaporizer pen line just last year. Most people would probably consider Snoop to be a potential number one on this type of list. The reason he isn’t is because his success as an artist never hinged on, or even initially benefited from this image. It formed much later in his career when he was already a multimillionaire and he began to really embrace it. That’s not taking anything away from Snoop, or saying that pot isn’t a major part of his brand, but people forget that at least his first three albums were not just about smoking weed; in fact they weren’t really about the topic at all.
2. Ricky Williams
If Ricky Williams were more famous outside of sports he’d definitely be number one on this list. I mean, this man actually gave up an NFL career because of weed. There are too many events and quotes on this subject to list them all, but just to give you an idea, let’s look at a few events surrounding the former star NFL running back.
After failing multiple drug tests, Williams quit the league and took a self imposed hiatus, where he traveled the world and was admittedly high for the duration of it. Then, after returning to the league, Williams failed another drug test, for, you guessed it, marijuana! The reason? He claimed that he smoked, then forgot that he wasn’t allowed to during the season because the smoking caused him to forget, so he kept doing it. After all of this was over, this legendary pot consumer had an entire ESPN 30 for 30 Documentary about him, and his feelings and interactions with pot. It’s on Netflix and if you haven’t seen it already I highly recommend it. Getting your own documentary while remaining a relevant player for the better part of a decade makes Ricky Williams, even to this day, one of the biggest celebrity stoners.
1. Seth Rogen
Besides being one of the biggest actors in Hollywood, the number one celebrity on this list, Seth Rogen, is also a prolific writer and marijuana activist. He’s written or been part of the team that created the story behind the popular stoner films Pineapple Express, This Is The End, and Knocked Up, among others. Rogen’s celebrity is intertwined with his success, as his most impressive endeavors have been films with a plot largely based around marijuana.
There are an almost unlimited amount of relevant interview quotes from Rogen, but to show you why he’s the biggest celebrity stoner on our list, here are a few from his 2011 interview with MTV. “I either get people started smoking weed or I put them out of business smoking weed,” Rogen said. He continued “I smoke a lot of weed when I write, generally speaking. It makes me not mind that I’m writing. Who wants to work? But if you’re stoned, it doesn’t seem like real work.”
