Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO, Elon Musk ended the ‘D’ speculation by unveiling the company’s first dual electric car as well as announcing a new safety and autopilot hardware. The added features will allow the company’s vehicles to park themselves as well as detect any dangerous situations that may be forthcoming.
Model-S to Surpass McLaren F1
Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) all-wheel drive model will be known as P85D featuring a dual-motor that will control torque, both for the front and rear wheels. The automaker claims that the dual-motor aspect will take its models to another new level in terms road holding and handling capabilities compared to the rear motor in the current Model-S.
The P85 rear motor already allows the cars to achieve 100% of peak torque right from the start, enough to beat the greatest supercar of all time McLaren F1 in terms of performance. It will now take 3.2 seconds for Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) new model to climb from 0 to 60Mph with the addition of the P85D rear motor. The result is one of the most efficient four-door car of all time with the fastest accelerating capability
Pre-orders for the new Dual Motor, Model-S are already open with deliveries for P85D expected to begin in December. Deliveries from 85D and 60D will begin in February. Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has confirmed that its next vehicles will all be fitted with a radar system that incorporates 12 long range ultrasonic sensors. The sensors will be used to sense 16 feet around the car, in all directions, regardless of the speed the car.
New Safety Measures
Tesla will take safety of its models to another new level by fitting its models with high-precision digitally controlled electric braking system, as well as a forward looking camera. The new system will be essential in preventing any form of collision from the front, sides or from leaving the road. Change of lanes in the new Model-S will be initiated by a simple tap of a turn signal. Speed management will be carried out using active traffic aware cruise control, once all the features of autopilot are uploaded in the car.
Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is taking the lead in initiating the driverless control technology, which is years away from reality. The company’s autopilot system is similar to the one used in airplanes that will be essential in alleviating the boring and dangerous aspect of road travel.
