Apple is Losing $6 Billion Annually to BlackBerry, Samsung (Benzinga)
On a quarterly basis, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been performing very well, but the company could be missing out on billions of dollars in additional revenue. Trip Chowdhry, the Managing Director of Equity Research at Global Equities Research, told Benzinga that while there are 60 million potential smartphone customers in India, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has only scratched the surface of its potential within the growing nation. “I think it’s a combination of many things,” said Chowdhry. “I think it is the lack of focus of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and the existence of competition. Basically, Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) and Samsung are very aggressive in creating a brand and having an association with whoever uses Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) or Samsung are considered elite customers. When you talk to consumers in India, they literally find that when they buy Samsung or Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) they are buying an iPhone at half the price.”

Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) executives delivered a lengthy list of new announcements this week at the smartphone maker’s annual conference, but the buzz has already shifted to what the company may be still hiding up its sleeve, including the possibility of a small tablet device. The rumours piqued the interest of developers and technology industry insiders at BlackBerry Live, a three-day conference in Orlando that wrapped up on Thursday. In some circles, it nearly overshadowed the company’s launch of a new lower-priced phone and the unlocking of BlackBerry Messenger to non-BlackBerry devices. Whether or not a smaller tablet – or a phablet (a phone so large it’s like a tablet) – is really on deck for the Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) this year is debatable, but rumours travel fast and run rampant at events like this one.

Research In Motion Ltd (BBRY) Option Traders Get Paid to Wait (SchaeffersResearch)
Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) options traders are using relatively unconventional methods to roll the dice on long-term support for the stock. More specifically, investors today are selling to open deep out-of-the-money put options, in the hopes that Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) will remain north of the strike through the next several months. So far today, Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has seen around 51,000 puts cross the tape, representing a 17% mark-up to its average intraday volume. A good chunk of the action transpired at the January 2014 11-strike put, where 16,600 contracts have traded at a volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of $1.21. More than two-thirds of the puts changed hands on the bid side, and volume is exceeding open interest at the LEAPS strike, underscoring our suspicions of sell-to-open volume.
