In the pizza business, advertising matters. In the company’s most recent quarter, advertising made up a whopping 9.5% of revenue. Is at least a portion of Papa John’s success attributable to its endorsement of Peyton Manning? Probably.

Betting on Manning
Of course, Papa John’s Int’l, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) isn’t the only business betting its advertising on Peyton Manning.
DIRECTV (NASDAQ:DTV)‘s Manning rap music video, “Football on Your Phone,” went viral.

MasterCard also continues its Peyton Manning TV ads. General Motors is placing its bets on the quarterback, too, using Manning to promote its new Buick Verano.

Manning is a safe bet
Though a Super Bowl win for the Denver Broncos would probably provide an extra kick for businesses betting on Manning, it’s not necessarily a requirement for Manning campaigns to be successful. To reiterate, Schnatter’s comments on Manning had nothing to do with his talent: “He’s one of the most admired and respected athletes who is very engaging with a great sense of humor.”

Obviously, Manning’s performance is important. And every win is a nice bonus. But his personal traits, too, make him an excellent athlete to endorse.

Win or lose, Manning is Manning.
