Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) just keeps the hits a-comin’. For a company that has been on the brink of complete collapse or being bought up by one of the major tech players, Nokia has sure been one o the more aggressive companies in introducing new devices in 2013. (We lost count at six after the latest unveil. Could be 10 for all we know.) With Nokia, is there such a thing as a saturation point for the devices that are in the mid- to upper range of pricing?
We would almost roll our eyes when it comes to Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) and its latest press event, since they seem to have been coming about as often as we change our calendars. We wonder, what in the world could Nokia be doing now that is somehow newer, better or more innovative than what has been done before? What could this unveil be that is not so much a mystery because of all the leaks beforehand? Well, while there have been some rumors, the number of leaks has been reatively small considering that Nokia has a media event scheduled for Tuesday, July 23, in London. (That is the day after this story is posted, for those of you keeping score.)
For having such an event, Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) has been quite secretive about this particular event, and there is all kinds of speculation about what this means – and not all of it is necessarily focused on a new device. Nokia invited guests to something “big” Tuesday in London, and the inivte was a bright orange square with the Nokia logo in the middle. As most things Nokia does with its invites, there are in themselves a little tease or hint into what might be coming at the event. So what this invitation mean?
There is speculation (thanks to CNET U.K.) that an already-existing device may have an exclusive deal with telecom network carrier Orange, which would suggest the color scheme – like perhaps the Lumia 925 or just-released 1020 (with the 41-megapixel camera) might have a model exclusive to the U.K.-based carrier. There is also talk that “big” refers to the rumored Lumia 625, which is supposed to have a 4.7-inch display to test the limits of Windows Phone. There is also some talk for a while now that Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) would delve into the tablet arena; might this be the opportunity to reveal a 6-inch megaPhone that had been discussed in previous rumor cycles?
There had not been very much leaked lately, relative to the Lumia 1020 by Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) being practically unveiled in its entirety before its announcement a couple weeks ago. What do you think this might mean? What do you think will be revealed a the event, and would you be interested in the device should you be proven right? If you are an investor like fund manager D E Shaw (see his full equity portfolio), do you continue to like the new product releases, or is there a sense of overkill at this point?
