The objective obviously is to help devices that run on Windows Phone 8 to gain an upper hand in the standoff with iOS and Android. …Microsoft wrote off $900M on the Surface RT tablets and is now hoping that its luck will change with the phones that run on the Windows 8 system. The company has been a late starter in the smartphone race and its devices have lagged behind in comparison to Samsung’s Androids and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s IPhones. Currently, Windows has only approximately a 5% share in of the global smartphone market.

This week, Microsoft announced its plans to bring Xbox Music to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android devices, as well as free streaming on Xbox Music via the web.
Microsoft drops MSN News contractors and freelancers (BusinessTech)
Microsoft Corp is laying off dozens of contract and freelance writers from its MSN news and entertainment portal as the giant software company seeks to reshape itself as a devices and services company. A spokesperson for the company confirmed the layoffs but declined to specify the number or comment further. A person familiar with the situation said the cuts could affect more than 100 people in all. The pruning of MSN writers, who contribute end edit columns, blogs and features to the site, comes just two months after Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced a radical reorganization of the company, which is only now starting to take effect.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) started sending out invitations to its September 23 event earlier this week. On its upcoming ‘Surface NYC event,’ the technology firm is set to launch its new tablets within the Surface line of devices. Those products are expected to be aimed at challenging the Android devices and iPads that currently dominate the market. The email invitations to key media personnel came with more detailed information about the event other than just the time and place of the launch. Those messages even displayed graphic images not just of the Surface tablet but also of its matching accessory, a keyboard.

Expiring on October 27, 2013, Microsoft is now offering a deal where you can stop by a select Microsoft retail store, hand them your old iPad, and they’ll give you a $200 gift card to be redeemed in the store. Obviously, Microsoft wants to entice customers to check out and eventually grab a Surface tablet as a replacement, but the gift card can be used for anything in the store. I know a lot of you have multiple iPads, upgrading to the newer versions when Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) releases them, with the older models gathering dust in a drawer somewhere.
