Because Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE:LNG) has experienced falling interest from the smart money, it’s safe to say that there is a sect of fund managers that decided to sell off their positions entirely in the fourth quarter. Interestingly, Brian J. Higgins’s King Street Capital said goodbye to the biggest stake of all the hedgies watched by Insider Monkey, worth close to $69.4 million in stock. Charles Lemonides’s fund, Valueworks LLC, also sold off its stock, about $5.9 million worth. These transactions are intriguing to say the least, as aggregate hedge fund interest fell by 2 funds in the fourth quarter.

As you can see these stocks had an average of 26.7 hedge funds with bullish positions and the average amount invested in these stocks was $576 million. That figure was $2280 million in LNG’s case. Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALNY) is the most popular stock in this table. On the other hand Suzano S.A. (NYSE:SUZ) is the least popular one with only 6 bullish hedge fund positions. Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE:LNG) is not the most popular stock in this group but hedge fund interest is still above average. Our overall hedge fund sentiment score for LNG is 69.9. Stocks with higher number of hedge fund positions relative to other stocks as well as relative to their historical range receive a higher sentiment score. Our calculations showed that top 30 most popular stocks among hedge funds returned 81.2% in 2019 and 2020, and outperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) by 26 percentage points. These stocks gained 5.3% in 2021 through March 19th and still beat the market by 0.8 percentage points.
