In this article, we will take a closer look at hedge fund sentiment towards American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE:AWK) at the end of the second quarter and determine whether the smart money was really smart about this stock.

Seeing as American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE:AWK) has faced bearish sentiment from the smart money, we can see that there exists a select few hedgies that slashed their full holdings in the second quarter. At the top of the heap, Renaissance Technologies said goodbye to the largest position of all the hedgies tracked by Insider Monkey, comprising close to $89.3 million in stock, and Sara Nainzadeh’s Centenus Global Management was right behind this move, as the fund cut about $3.6 million worth. These bearish behaviors are intriguing to say the least, as aggregate hedge fund interest stayed the same (this is a bearish signal in our experience).

As you can see these stocks had an average of 23.1 hedge funds with bullish positions and the average amount invested in these stocks was $478 million. That figure was $653 million in AWK’s case. The Williams Companies, Inc. (NYSE:WMB) is the most popular stock in this table. On the other hand China Telecom Corporation Limited (NYSE:CHA) is the least popular one with only 5 bullish hedge fund positions. American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE:AWK) is not the most popular stock in this group but hedge fund interest is still above average. Our overall hedge fund sentiment score for AWK is 62.2. Stocks with higher number of hedge fund positions relative to other stocks as well as relative to their historical range receive a higher sentiment score. Our calculations showed that top 10 most popular stocks among hedge funds returned 41.4% in 2019 and outperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) by 10.1 percentage points. These stocks gained 23.8% in 2020 through September 14th and still beat the market by 17.6 percentage points.
