With push for data democratization, Intel tries to play both sides of the big data debate (GigaOM)
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has been taking steps in recent months to promote the democratization of consumer data — the idea that consumers should be able to check out the information that companies are collecting on them — even though it might not be immediately obvious how the chip maker could generate revenue through the initiatives, according to an article from the MIT Technology Review. It’s somewhat surprising for Intel to be pushing for data democratization. Intel chips are at the heart of servers that companies and government organizations use to crunch heavy loads of consumer data. And Intel also has come out with its own Hadoop distribution for handling big data.
Intel releases ‘Beacon Mountain’ dev tools for Android Jelly Bean (ZDNet)
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has released a set of development tools aimed at making it easier for people to build apps for Android smartphones and other devices based on Intel or ARM Holdings plc (ADR) (NASDAQ:ARMH) designs. The silicon chip-maker hopes the new toolset, codenamed Beacon Mountain, will help extend the number of apps that can run on Android smartphones that use Intel’s chips inside. The company also said it would speed up development time by enabling compatibility with both Intel and ARM designs simultaneously, as well as providing tools to design, code and debug apps.

19-year-old Romanian wins Intel science fair with cheap self-driving car tech (VentureBeat)
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has just awarded $75,000 to a Romanian teenager who created a model for a low-cost, self-driving car. For his entry in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (a huge, international science competition for high school students), Ionut Budisteanu, 19, created a realistic design for a car like Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s self-driving cars. The big difference is, his version would be viable around the world, not just in super-rich enclaves like Silicon Valley. His work earned him the Gordon E. Moore Award, which is named after another scientist: Intel’s co-founder.
Intel holds the key to a successful $200 PC: IHS (ZDNet)
Can PC OEMs put together an ultrathin, touch-screen PC that will both appeal to consumers and come in at just $200? Analysts believe so, but chipmaker Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) holds the key to success. And that key is almost older than dirt – cut prices. “A price point that low seems far-fetched considering the mobile PC prices of today, with Ultrabooks and other ultrathins going as high as $1,000 or more,” said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for compute platforms at IHS. “However, the small laptops known as netbooks saw their prices reach down into the $200 range at the height of their popularity a few years ago, and a cost analysis of netbooks shows how such a low level of pricing can be used to support a no-frills type of ultrathin PC.”
