Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has made its mark in the phone industry with the acquisition of Nokia, and towards the end of 2014, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has come up with a brand new health band, which is targeting the already crowded wearables market space. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) General Manager for New devices, Matt Barlow talked on Fox Business about Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s new health band and its features.
Barlow said that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s new health band is not just a fitness band but also a smart band which has all the capabilities of smart watch. He said that this product can be used for text messaging, mails, phone calls and it has state of the art fitness module. He added that the features of the health band includes 24 hour heart rate monitoring, onboard GPS, etc.
There are a lot of fitness bands out there, which includes fit bit, Nike’s band, etc. But the biggest of them all is the Apple Watch which might hit the market sometime in 2015. Barlow said that he loves competition from other companies with similar product. Barlow thinks that Apple Watch and Microsoft’s Health band are two different products. He added that their health band would act as a supplement to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Smart watch.
Barlow said that the key features include 24 hour heart rate monitoring, 48 hour battery life and in addition to all these features, the health band supports the phone devices which runs on Windows, Android and iOS. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s health band was launched in October with a price tag of $199.
“[…] I love competition. I think Apple Watch and Microsoft band are actually two quite different things even by name alone. […] We supplement that (Apple Watch functionality). We are a fitness focused device. Its an Apple Watch and its a smart band. They actually involve a number of detailed capabilities for fitness. 24 hr heart rate monitoring, 48 hrs worth of battery life. We work on iOS, Android and Windows Phone,” Barlow said.
He thinks that in spite of heavy competition in the sector, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s health band stands out mainly due to the fact that the device supports all three OS. Barlow said that all the fitness bands do a lot of measurements, but Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s health band is different in using the measurements to get insights, which the user can act upon. He mentioned that the device uses Microsoft Health, the application which runs Microsoft band. He said that the band is not going to solve the health problems, but it is going to highlight the problems like irregular sleep, poor work rate and low calorie burning rate, which the user can act upon later.
