Deepfakes are becoming more and more common by the day. As AI technology becomes widely available, access to a larger audience means the number of scams carried out using deepfakes is increasing. META wants to help curb the rampant use of AI-generated content in scams, which is why it continues to work on technologies aimed at identifying AI-generated video content.
META’s ‘Video Seal’ technology provides the desired video watermarking technology, aimed not only at avoiding unethical use of AI videos but also at protecting originality. Even though there are many other similar technologies available out there, META believes it offers a unique solution, even different from the one that Microsoft currently has in place. Here’s how.
Other video watermarking tools often become ineffective in the face of video compression. All social media platforms compress content to optimize the workings of their respective technologies. Watermarking tools fail to pass through this optimization, rendering them useless on social media, where most of the unethical usage of AI content occurs.
META also claims that Video Seal adds a hidden message to the video. This hidden message can later be used to determine the origins of the video, something that law enforcement agencies will find quite beneficial. This message is resilient against both compression and video editing tools. While META’s watermarking tools aren’t a game changer, they can certainly be deployed by researchers and devs to further polish the technology. Video Seal is open source and can be deployed in existing software.
META also already has a watermarking tool for AI-generated speech. It goes by the name ‘AudioSeal’ and is intended to curb scams where scammers take over people’s social media accounts and pretend to be the original person using AI-generated fake voice.
As AI regulation tightens with time, companies want to have a system in place where they can take responsibility for the way their AI technology is used, especially in a country with high litigation like the US. META has a history of censorship and misuse of its platform, so it makes sense that they’re willing to take the lead in making AI safe for everyone.
META Platforms ranks 3rd on our latest list of the 31 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 235 hedge fund portfolios held META at the end of the third quarter which was 219 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of META as a leading AI investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter timeframe. If you are looking for an AI stock that is as promising as META but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the cheapest AI stock.
