Hedge Fund Internships: What to Expect

You may be interested in learning more about hedge fund internships if you have any interest in working in this field upon graduating from college. While there are many opportunities out there, whether or not you secure the right position at the right hedge fund is based on a variety of factors.

As a college student, you may have already decided that you want to obtain a job with a hedge fund after graduation. However, this is not the type of position you step into without any experience. Instead, the more experience you have within the industry the  better chance there is that you will be offered at least one job when the time comes.

Complete at least One Internship at a Hedge Fund

Once you have identified potential hedge funds in your area, or a city in which you are willing to live during your internship, it is time to begin your search.

There are several ways to find hedge fund internships, with some of the most common including:

-General job boards

-Through your college

-Via the hedge fund company websites

-Through your network

-By “cold contacting” hedge funds you are interested in working for

What to Expect during your Internship

No two hedge fund internships are the same. Your responsibilities will be determined largely by the hedge fund you are working for, the position you are hired for, and of course, the type of assistance they are in need of during your tenure.

Some hedge fund internships are full-time while others are part-time. Only you know how many hours you can handle, based on your current courses as well as any other job you may be holding down at the same time.

Even if you only work for a hedge fund 10 or 15 hours per week conducting research and completing market analysis, it is typically enough exposure to give you a better idea of how the industry works.

The Benefits of a Hedge Fund Internship

In addition to the overall work experience, there are additional benefits of hedge fund internships:

-An inside look at the workings of a successful hedge fund

-The ability to grow your network under the guidance of those who are in the position you want to reach later in your career

-An increased chance of being selected for a full-time job upon graduation, given that you prove your worth during the internship

Can you imagine what an internship with Greenlight Capital, Bp Capital or Renaissance Technologies would do for your resume?

Hedge fund internships are competitive, but if you want to work in this field after obtaining your degree it is a must.
