Founder of Tai Chi Hedge Fund Gets Sentenced to 240 Hours of Community Service (Opalesque.com)
Hong Kong’s Eastern Magistrates’ Court has sentenced Yau Ka Fai to 240 hours of community service following his conviction for holding himself out as carrying on a business in asset management without a license from the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). Yau, whilst unlicensed by the SFC, represented to investors that he was the manager of a fund known as Tai Chi Hedge Fund and received a commission for his service between September 2011 and November 2015. The fund invested in, amongst other things, stocks and futures contracts.

The head of France’s stock-market regulator warned that privacy concerns could jeopardize the country’s biggest insider-trading probe, saying that a court decision may vindicate “obvious crooks.” Robert Ophèle, chairman of the Autorité des Marchés Financiers, railed against the decision of a French court that questioned whether investigators should have obtained proper authorization before requesting phone records for the traders at the heart of the probe. The case has been referred to the European Union’s top court for review.
