Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Google X division has been working on a lot of ambitious projects, which includes projects like Project Loom, Self-driving cars, etc. Many people believe that self-driving cars is still long way away from becoming a reliable technology. But Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has announced that they will be beginning to test its self-driving cars in public roads this summer and this testing will be happening in at Northern California. Is there something in Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s self-driving vehicles that will be tested in summer that what Google had claimed earlier? CNBC’s Phil LeBeau reported on CNBC about the update on Google’s self-driving cars testing and its implications.
LeBeau said that Google is moving aggressively in the research of its autonomous vehicles. He pointed out that Google has tested its vehicles in test tracks and private places thus far. But he mentioned that it is about to change. He said that Google is planning to test its autonomous vehicles in public roads and places. He said that the test is going to happen in Mountain View, California. But what is Google doing to ensure safety of the people? LeBeau said that Google is planning to have test drivers on board with steering wheels and brakes mounted in the vehicles. Google’s initial plans did not include any of these stuffs though.
Chris Urmson, Project Director for Google’s Self-driving cars has shared his thought about the next phast of testing.
“Each prototype’s speed is capped at a neighborhood friendly 25 mph, and during this next phase of our project we’ll have safety drivers aboard with a removable steering wheel, accelerator pedal and brake pedal that allow them to take over driving if needed,” Urmson was quoted as saying.
LeBeau said that this self-driving cars is still in research phase. He pointed out that Google’s initial plan and first prototypes don’t have anything on the inside of the car. But for the next phase of testing they are planning to add steering wheels, brake pedals and accelerator pedals and are planning to have a test driver inside the vehicle. This is mainly to ensure the safety of public when the test is going on.
But Google ultimate aim is to attain the target of just pressing the button and reaching the intended target without doing anything else. Google has reported 11 low speed accidents in these prototypes in the testing so far. Google has completed 1.1 million miles of testing so far and reported 11 accidents in those testing. LeBeau said that inspite of this minor glitch, Google is determined to continue the research and take it public.
