Audi is looking to steal some lustre from Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S at the Geneva Auto Show next week, courtesy a sleek sports car dubbed the R8 e-tron, its first zero-emission vehicle. A Bloomberg article reported on the news and discussed the performances of both cars and whether or not it could be considered a threat to Tesla.
In the next week, Audi will announce its second generation R8 supercar at the Geneva Motor Show. Stefan Bratzel, Director of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, has appreciated the new initiative taken by Audi to enter into the field of electric vehicles (EV).
“It’s a symbol for the brand that will help burnish the image of other vehicles. It’s good that they finally have something to offer in this segment,” Bratzel said.
Buzz from the R8 e-tron could help Audi further heat up its battle with BMW for the global lead in luxury-car sales but it won’t be an easy job for Audi to beat Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) in the EV segment, considering Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S was just declared the best car for the second straight year in an annual report from Consumer Reports.
If we compare the performances of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S and Audi’s R8 e-tron, we might come to know that the electric version of Audi’s edgy R8 can drive as far as 450 kilometers, equal to 280 miles before it needs to be recharged, which can be done within 2 hours, whereas Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S can go as far as 502 km, about an 11% improvement. Audi’s R8 e-tron can go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in about 3.9 seconds, whereas the Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S can hit that speed in as little as 3.4 seconds.
According to the Consumers Reports rankings, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s Model S was given a score of 99 with an average reliability score of 3 out of 5 this year which has made it the best model overall, but Tesla Motors Inc might still face some challenges other than Audi in the future from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), as they are also planning to bring innovative, self-driven and/or electric vehicles into the market. As far as Audi is concerned, we believe, after comparing the performance of both models, that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) should not be worrying about Audi for now, as the Model S is quite ahead of R8 e-tron in terms of performance.
