The newest season of Jerry Seinfeld’s web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee launched last week with a short skit starring Michael Richards, followed by a great interview with Kevin Hart. The season premiere was apparently the most successful episode of the entire series yet, which continues to soar in popularity since its relatively unheralded beginning.
The upcoming season features a great mix of comedians, including Amy Schumer, one of the best new roasters on the Comedy Central Roasts (waiting for a new one CC), Bill Burr, former Saturday Night Live member Fred Armisen, YouTube sensation Miranda Sings (a fictional character created by comedian Colleen Ballinger), Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, and Ali Wentworth.
Fans of Seinfeld’s hit TV show will remember Wentworth from the legendary Soup Nazi episode, where she played Jerry’s girlfriend with whom he shared an embarrassing penchant for calling each other “schmoopie”. He eventually disavowed knowing her in front of said Soup Nazi after they got caught kissing in his line.
It was of course that hit TV show on NBC from 1989 to 1998, arguably the greatest TV series ever, which propelled Jerry to worldwide recognition, and set him up for life as one of the Richest Stand Up Comedians in the World. Did Jerry top the list with his estimated $800 million (which he denies) fortune? Check out our list to see.
Given Jerry’s enduring appeal as a standup comedian, and the wealth of friends in the business he has from his nearly 40-year career, it’s not surprising that he’s managed to interview some of comedy’s biggest icons on his series thus far, including Jay Leno, David Letterman, Don Rickles, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Louis C.K, Sarah Silverman, Carl Reiner, and Mel Brooks. Yet for all that, which has made for four terrific seasons thus far and counting, there are six great comedians who would make for tremendous interviews that Jerry needs to get on his show ASAP.
A list like this is bound to stir up debate, but first, a disclaimer. This is not a list of the six “best” comedians that Jerry has yet to interview, per se. Rather, it is a list of the six comedians which in my opinion would make for the funniest and most interesting interviews with Jerry. Let’s get on with it then, starting with…
6. Jim Gaffigan
This would be an interesting interview, and one of those pairings that could either be a total dud, or turn out tremendously. Since Jerry seems to be able to pull a fun interview out of just about anyone, I’ll lean towards the latter. While Jim is not one of my favorite comedians, I have to say that I could see Jerry and him having great repartee.
5. Joe Rogan
Joe is most well-known for his podcast series the Joe Rogan Experience, and for being the long-time color commentator for the UFC. While Joe isn’t as well-known for his standup, he’s an extremely funny guy, interesting, and well-versed in a lot of subjects. He would make for a great guest on CCC, and a guy somewhat unlike any other Seinfeld has interviewed.
4. Andrew “Dice” Clay
Clay and Seinfeld have a long history that stretches all the way back to the 1970’s, and were embroiled in a bit of a feud throughout parts of the 80’s and 90’s, which was somewhat personal, but also greatly played up by the media. With those differences now behind them, I think these two could show off their well-documented contrasting styles and have an entertaining interview.
3. Julia Louis-Dreyfus
Julia has been the lone member of Seinfeld to break the long-running “curse” that afflicted the stars of the series, starring in two hit shows in the last decade in The New Adventures of Old Christine, and Veep. Julia is not just a great comedic actress, but an extremely funny woman in interviews, and Jerry and her had great chemistry during their years working together on the show. This would make for an interview that would be equal parts funny and poignant (as Jerry’s interview with Michael Richards was), and just plain awesome.
2. Norm Macdonald
Norm hasn’t been up to a whole lot lately, with his own web interview series Norm Macdonald Live seemingly on a permanent hiatus. Norm campaigned for The Late Late Show gig to replace the departing Craig Ferguson, which he likely would have been great at, but was passed over in favor of James Corden (boooo).
Norm is an incredibly witty guy and great storyteller, and his comic timing and delivery is virtually second-to-none. His aforementioned series was one of the best on the internet as well, especially the first season before he cleaned it up somewhat during the second, and Norm usually makes for a great interview. I would love to see where conversations between him and Jerry would lead.
1. Stephen Colbert
It’s Stephen Colbert; need I say more? I really don’t know how Jerry could cut an interview between these two down to 20 or so minutes, it would be filled to the point of bursting with hilarity, like my stomach would be. I could watch the entire collection of hours-long footage of these two engaging each other and love every minute of it.
Besides, Seinfeld has already interviewed Letterman and Leno, and will interview Leno’s replacement Fallon later this season. It’s only a matter of time before he interviews Letterman’s replacement as well then isn’t it? I sure hope so.
