Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has proudly announced hitting a major milestone for the company. After only one year and a half of being available on the Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Play Store, Blackberry’s instant messaging app, BBM, has been downloaded 100 million times as reported on CNET.
“100 million is great, but a billion is even better. BBM users have now sent more than 1 billion stickers. And we are achieving 1 billion virtual goods impressions in the BBM Shop monthly. All these numbers just go to show the tremendous momentum behind BBM right now,” stated the company’s blog.
By achieving 100 million downloads, Blackberry Ltd’s instant messaging app is now on the top tier of the messaging apps available on Google Inc’s Play Store. The latest version of the app for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android was released a couple of days ago, on March 2.
“Just because we hit 100 million installs on Google Play doesn’t mean we have to stop there. Download the latest version today and help us get to a billion! And, as we mentioned the other week, BBM for Android is also now available on the Amazon App Store,” stated the company’s blog.
Along with the three new phones Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) wants to introduce to the market this year, the company’s CEO also said that he’s keeping an open mind about whether to get the company back into the tablet game.
One the secret weapons that Blackberry Ltd has always had up its sleeve is the BlackBerry Messenger or BBM but it was only available for the company’s phones only. But as the market moved towards Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android devices and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS, the BBM lost some of its appeal.
A great response from Blackberry Ltd was offering its BBM to be available and functional on other platforms, like Apple Inc.’s iOS and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Windows Phone in addition to Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android and BlackBerry. The decision was made to focus the company’s hardware business on corporate users and boost usage with its software and services. Blackberry states that the efforts have paid off.
Still, Blackberry continues to be one of the smaller players in the mobile messaging world. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s WhatsApp has as many as 5 billion app installs on Google Play and Facebook’s Messenger application has around 1 billion app installs. WeChat, a China-based instant messaging app has around 500 million downloads.
