As Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is ready to release its much advertised smart-watch, its competitors are also taking quick steps to upgrade their devices to work with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android phones to avoid losing their market shares. A Bloomberg article reported on the news and discussed how the rival companies of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) are releasing new software this week that will make their devices compatible with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android phones.
“Apple’s Watch is likely to be the device of choice for people carrying multiple mobile devices, such as an iPhone and an Android phone. For other vendors, applications are key,” said Werner Goertz, an Analyst at Gartner Inc.
As Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to increase its iOS users by launching its watch, the competition for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android users is also escalating. This week, Withings Inc. is releasing new software that will enable the devices to work with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android phones. Withings Inc. is a maker of the Activité watches that work with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS phones. Pebble also announced a new watch last week based on Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android Wear operating system while Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc (MMI) is pouring money into its Moto 360.
On March 9 at an event in San Francisco, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will provide more details about its Watch, which is planned to be released in April. According to a person having knowledge of the matter, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Watch must be paired with an iPhone and it will only work with newer models which still could eat into the business of companies like Withings and Pebble, which also make devices that are compatible with iOS. For other vendors to stay in the competition, new, interesting and improved applications for their customers could be a key to their success.
“We intend to continue to spend heavily in this space. What the Apple launch has done is raise awareness for the category in general, and it may improve our sales by driving overall awareness,” said Rick Osterloh, President of Motorola Mobility.
Launching Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s Watch may not only be beneficial for the company itself but it might also help competitor brands in boosting awareness of their devices in the same category. Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc (MMI) might also get an increase in its sales volume with such awareness created by Apple Inc. , whereas Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is also expected to receive an increased amount of compatibility from Withings Inc. for its Android phones that would help in growing its customer base and current market share.
