Apple Inc. (AAPL): Is a MegaPhone on the 2014 Calendar?

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) just loves not giving anything away about its future plans. Rumor and innuendo are the name of the game. But even if the company doesn’t give away what it plans to do, it usually at least gives us some hint or glimpse through some of the words by its executives. And one of the questions that has been asked, but not yet answered to satisfaction is: With the new evolution of smartphones leading to larger screens, and Apple only moving to the 4-inch screen with the latest iPhone while Samsung and others are getting bigger, is it possible that we might see a near-megaPhone-sized iPhone in the near future?

To be fair, it seems that question may have been the second-most popular, behind: Is Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) going to bend to market pressures and actually produce a budget iPhone? Of course, that is where all the rumors are leading us at this point, so that it seems that question may wind up being answered in the affirmative.

With the rumor machine focused so heavily on the lower-priced iPhone, the eyes and the questions have been taken off the ball regarding a bigger iPhone design after CEO Tim Cook sort of hemmed and hawed about the priority of Apple not to compromise certain qualities of display just for a bigger screen size.

He talked as if the technology wasn’t there yet for Apple to create a larger-display smartphone because the technical aspects (brightness, color saturation, etc.) were in a mode to be compromised.

But what if Mr. Cook was just throwing us a smokescreen? What if Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is actually considering such a thing? If some sources are true (which Reuters has quoted), this latest rumor could be significant. As Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has defined the smartphone space with its larger screens of late with the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3, it appears that Apple may be looking to catch up after all.

Word on the street is that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has begun taking a couple of models to its Asian producers to create a couple of larger-design displays, one reportedly for a 4.7-inch display (for a larger iPhone concept) and a 5.7-inch display for perhaps a Galaxy Note competitor we are affectionately calling iPhone Grande.

We don’t know anything about what the final result may be of this mock-up, as the sources say that Apple is notorious for tweaking specs until the last possible moment – could the 4.7-inch screen wind up smaller? Could the bigger display end up bigger or scrapped altogether? As we are told that Apple is only going to its Asian suppliers about such a concept device, it’s possible we may not see anything resembling these specs until perhaps the spring of next year at the earliest.
