iPad Mini Sell: Apple iPad Mini On Pace to Outsell Big Brother

iPad Mini Sell: When Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced the iPad mini to the market a couple months ago, many wondered if it was unique enough to stand out in this space. Its high price when compared to the competition added more uncertainty.

At this point, it is safe to say that we have an answer. According to a recent report by NPD DisplaySearch, it was originally believed that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) would sell approximately six million minis over the holiday season.

While this goal seemed reasonable, NPD DisplaySearch analyst David Hsieh recently told CNet that the tech giant “doubled its orders with display panel makers to more than 12 million.”

Hsieh added,Demand for the iPad mini is so strong that’s selling better than the new fourth-generation iPad.’

The NPD DisplaySearch report discusses initial concerns and criticism, all of which now seem quite silly:

When Apple unveiled the iPad mini in October many criticized it’s $329 price as too expensive for a 7 segment tablet PC, given competition from other 7” tablet PCs, including Amazon Kindle Fire, Google Nexus, ASUS, and many private labels. However, there is always a strong base of customers who only want Apple products; recently, the iPad mini was voted one of the hottest consumer products of 2012 in Japan. The iPad mini immediately faced supply shortages for its 7.85” XGA display, supplied by AUO and LG Display. Originally, Apple planned to sell 6 million units in 2012; according to the Quarterly Small/Medium Shipment and Forecast Report, only 1.6 million panels shipped in Q3’12, but Apple is asking panel makers to ship more than 12 million in Q4’12 to fulfill the strong demand.”

What is the reason for this? Why are so many people turning to the smaller iPad when the full-size device has been popular for so many years?

While there is no definite answer, Hsieh added the following:

“It seems people especially like the size…[it’s] lighter, slimmer and easier to carry.”

There is no arguing that. The Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad mini, with its 7.85-inch display, is undoubtedly smaller than the full-size tablet, making it easier to transport.

With all of this information, you may have one final question on your mind: what does this mean for future sales of the iPad mini?

“In 2013, it is likely that Apple will adjust its product portfolio to meet the strong demand for the iPad Mini. We believe that Apple is targeting total iPad shipments of 100 million in 2013, half accounted for by the iPad Mini,” Hsieh concluded.

Take into consideration that the iPad mini is now available in other countries, such as Russia, and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be forced to contract with another panel supplier.
