That Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will be releasing a free Windows 10 update to users of Windows 7 and Windows 8 is not new. However, a report now suggests that even users of unlicensed versions of the older Windows operating systems may be getting the newest from the software giant.
According to Reuters, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has just bared in a conference in China that it will be giving away its prized operating system regardless of whether a user’s copy is genuine or not.
The announcement was made by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Terry Myerson, the executive responsible for running the company’s Windows division, at the WinHEC technology conference in Shenzhen, China.
“We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10,” Reuters quotes Myerson as saying in a follow up interview.
To be clear, it appears that the plan is intended for China. It’s not clear from the Reuters report whether the plan to upgrade earlier Windows versions to the latest version regardless of legitimate or illegitimate licenses is also intended for the global market.
But if Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) really plans to upgrade PCs in China running Windows 7 and Windows 8 to Windows 10 even if their copy of Windows is pirated, it is still a surprising move from the software giant.
According to the news organization, the plan is to give away Windows to “re-engage” with users of the operating system in the country. It is estimated that only a fourth of all PCs in China have genuine licenses for Windows, Reuters notes.
Meanwhile, Myerson also revealed that Windows 10 will likely rollout “this summer”, Reuters says. The executive also said that his company is working with Lenovo, the largest PC maker in the world and a Chinese company, to release Windows 10 in the country.
There has been a lot of changes at the Redmond, Washington-based software giant recently, thanks in part to its new CEO Satya Nadella. The company has showed the world its own take on augmented reality with HoloLens. The firm is also killing off its derided Internet Explorer browser and integrating its intelligent assistant named Cortana in its replacement codenamed Spartan.
Microsoft also recently announced Windows Hello which will enable users to use their fingers, faces and eyes as passwords in the future. Microsoft is also revamping the way it delivers Windows Updates, continually developing new software suites like Office 2016 and giving away other free stuff too.
Philippe Laffont’s Coatue Capital Management increased its position in Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) by the end of the December quarter of 2014 to about 12.23 million shares, up a very substantial 464% quarter over quarter.
