Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is planning to launch four new phones over the next year and its venturing in becoming a giant in software as reported on ABC News.
During the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona this past Tuesday, Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s CEO John Chen said that since he took over a little over a year ago, he has undertaken a “philosophical” shift from merely making headsets.
“We are committed to making software as a business, we are going to evolve,” Chen said.
Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) revealed during the congress that its planning on launching a new touchscreen slider device later this year. The phone does not have a name, exact release date or price yet but the company is calling it a “dual curved display” that seems to be similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge.
The Canadian smartphone company stated that it will also be launching a new Porsche Design device and another keyboard-based phone, no further details were given for those models. Still, Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) announced a new low-end touchscreen phone called The Leap.
Earlier this week, Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) announced its initiative to bring more of its software to other platforms that include Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Windows, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android. The company says that it will be releasing apps like Blackberry Hub and calendar for other platforms. The Blackberry Experience, a set of three software packages made to improve its security and communications for business and government customers and it will be available later this year.
The major move that CEO John Chen made to transform Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) came in November when it separated the most successful applications from its devices and made them available for operating systems of competitors. Since then, it has struck new deals to deliver software for Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (SSNHY).
“We are going to compete with Samsung and we are going to collaborate with Samsung. We have a very small hardware percentage around the world today, so our strategy is to expand our server-available market by making it cross-platform. We can now have a business that spans 99 percent of the market,” Chen stated.
As of today, the sales of Blackberry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) hardware represent 73% of the company’s revenue. Chen said that with his vision, devices and software will become “two pillars” of his business. The CEO also stated that the company is stabilizing financially but chose not to disclose any figures.
