While smoking a cigarette, in order to exhale smoke, we first inhale around 600 different ingredients that one cigarette is consisted of. Moreover, once they are burned, those 600 ingredients create more than 7,000 chemicals! Each pack of cigarettes contains the information on the percentage of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide. However, cigarettes are not the only products with various health-harming substances. Not to name all of them, we would just mention few which are the most common. For example, acetone you can find in nail polisher. Then, butane is used in the fluid of a lighter and lead is used in batteries. Moreover, did you know that tar is used in a material for paving roads? Nicotine is used as an insecticide, whereas carbon monoxide, in my opinion, has the worst scenario – you can find it in a car exhaust fumes.
We all have been there when an old truck that releases a lot of fumes passes us by, we try to surpass the fume or just not to inhale for a few moments. Moreover, if we are around it long enough, we could even catch the smell. Did you notice that too? So, how do smokers deal with the bad smell of cigarettes?
Some suggestions are that hands should be washed after every cigarette, as the worst smell stays right in between the fingers. Others, on the other hand, use perfumes, deodorants and chewing gums to cover it. In any case, non-smokers can easily smell if other person smokes regularly. However, sometimes it is also possible to smell a cigarette smoke even nobody is smoking! This phenomenon is called parosmia, which is a distortion of smell sense. If you have it, you can sense the smell of something rotten or burned most of the time, even though there is nothing burned or rotten. It is associated, for that reason, with cigarette smoke.
