Although the title might be somewhat confusing, the definition is pretty simple actually. Realistic fiction involves books that depict realistic people and events, set in the present or recent past, and with characters living in real places. Plots in realistic fiction novels highlight common social issues such as marriage, jobs, addictions, etc. The fact that people can relate to events and people depicted in these novels is probably the reason this genre is so profitable.
