There are tons of place to vacation, but the cheapest places in Mexico to vacation at might be a bit more of interest to those who are trying to save a few bucks. We all work very hard for our vacation time, sometimes saving for a year or more. So when the time hits to actually pack your bags and go, it would be a shame to squander all of your cash in one go. Wouldn’t it be nice to have an incredible vacation without spending every last dime in your account?

Don’t let this make you think that you’re giving up any fun or beautiful sites though. These places will still provide you with a phenomenal getaway. If you’re in a popular resort area, you might have to hoard your change because your spending so much on accommodation, food and drinks.

There are some really great places to visit in Mexico that are beautiful and safe, but not all of them are money conscious spots. Save that money for more experiences by going to spots that are on the map, but not totally inundated with tourists. A huge touristy resort town equals disaster for your wallet.  Shell out some extra cash for a fun diving tour, a surf board rental for the week or perhaps a truly magnificent piece of art to bring home. You can choose to be a bit more free with your money since you won’t be spending tons of it just on a room to lay your head down at night. 7. Todos Santos

This is the escape you might have been looking for. While there are hoards of tourists flocking to the nearby Cabo San Lucas, you can chill in an equally beautiful but much more chilled out place here in Todos Santos. This also means a cheaper holiday for you because it’s not as popular yet. The surf is swell, the art is eclectic, and the mountain backdrop helps make this a stunning getaway.

6. Merida

Another spot that’s not too far from a touristy beach is Merida. The crowded beaches of Cancun are a mere four hours away. Take a weekend trip here to see the spectacle that goes on in the historic center. The brick cathedrals that have roads circling them close off to vehicles to make way for performance stages and food vendors. There are also other Mayan sites in the area, as well as mangroves and fishing villages.

5. La Paz

Located on the Baja peninsula to the east coast is another more budget-friendly destination. You won’t be in the hustle and bustle of the neighboring Cabo San Lucas, so your dollar will go a bit further here. Wonderful beaches, excellent food, fun activities, and more. If you’re really trying to stretch your dollar, try camping on the beach.

4. Playa Troncones

This spot is a bit more off the travel path, which in turn makes it a bit cheaper to travel around. The mom and pops shops and restaurants, and family owned selection of accommodation are more reasonably priced than the neighboring Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. This is considered one of the best surfing beaches in the country, and even the world.

3. Huatulco

This spot has only slowly been developing, and the stretches of beaches still look unspoiled by large concrete buildings. Hang out here for a cheaper beach getaway. However, you might be tempted to spend your savings on the fun experiences that are available here like surfing, cycling, diving, kayaking, and rafting.

2. Mazatlan

Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco shadowed over this once popular beach resort town, but it’s making a comeback. Since it’s not on the same level yet, that means your wallet won’t be affected as much. The locals are revamping the historic spots, like the opera house and main square, and charming cafes are starting to pop up, too. This beach resort spot will be a nice alternative to the more popular neighbors.

1. Guanajuato

Here’s a way to get to know more about the culture without spending any money. The October festival, Cervantino, is an explosion of culture and excitement. Ballet folklore, mariachis, orchestras, and even Mexican punk bands get together to jam out and provide entertainment. This town is otherwise a chilled colonial town with other historical sites of interest, like a mummy museum.
