Alright, let’s be honest with each other, we doubt you have been wondering that much about the places to visit in Cameroonbefore you die. It’s just simply not that popular of a tourist destination. Let’s just say, more than half the continent, that doesn’t get recognized for drawing in tourism. Could it be the harsh terrain and weather in some areas? The endless unrest in some countries? The lack of knowledge about the countries? Whatever it is, let’s start pulling down those thoughts and give Africa a second chance. Let’s start with Cameroon.
While this country still experiences some tough issues, the tourist destinations are widely not affected. In fact, the people in most places are often lovely and welcoming since they don’t see visitors all that often.
So what do you know about Cameroon? Did you know there are magnificent jungles teeming with wildlife? Crazy hiking adventures through mountainous terrain? What about beaches, did you know there are some truly beautiful beaches with sandy shores and clear water? There’s even some weird terrain that gives a bizarrely beautiful scene.
We will fully admit, many of the towns and cities can be a bit rugged and perhaps even unwelcoming, or not of any interest. While some of those places might be necessary to transit though, there’s no reason to stay. Transportation will be a bit more intrepid as well, but it doesn’t mean this isn’t a great place to travel. There are quite a few places to visit in Cameroon before you die, so let’s give it a chance…
7. Ring Road
Meaning “grasslands” this place is far more than just some field of green. The earth is red with spiky peaked mountains and the valleys are green and yellow. The villages of this area are sprinkled along the valley and rather rough atmosphere. Cycling and hiking to a camping spot are the popular activities to do.
6. Limbe
A beautiful botanical garden, the second oldest on the content in fact, where not only incredible flower flourish but aromatic spices as well. The Wildlife Center is better than the zoos, and when you’re ready to just chill out, head to one of the miles of beaches. Batoke village happens to feature volcano with lava still pumping out for a fascinating site.
5. Mount Cameroon
Climbing from sea level to over 4,000 meters is a feat! But when you get up there, the views will certainly be worth it. It usually takes about three days and two nights to get this hike done and the money paid to get here gets put to good use in the communities that live on the hillsides. Employ a local villager for the hike for safety and information purposes.
4. Foumban
Into arts and royalty? This is your spot. The Sultan’s Palace is a must see while you’re here, and the museum features tons of historic relics and gorgeous art work. If you want to take something home to remember your visit by, then the Village des Artisans will be the place to provide you with authentic handicrafts to adorn your home with and give to loved ones.
3. Maroubra
Here we are in the very north of the country. It’s a good base for some northern explorations, most notably, the Mandara Mountains. The incredible landscapes here might be some of the best in the country. Here you go adventurers, here’s your playground! This city is also host to a market, and a grand mosque, and is a gateway to Nigeria or Chad.
2. Kribi
Did someone say beach getaway? Here you go! These are the best beaches in Cameroon. Crystal blue water and sandy beaches will greet you, you will likely have one of the most scrumptious seafood dinners in your life, and an ice cold beer to go along with it. The Chutes de La Lobe is a stunning waterfall just outside of town.
And, the best place to visit in Cameroon before you die is: Campo and Ebodje
It’s said that the beaches here in Ebodje are even better than Kiribi, but you can be the judge of that. Ebodje is home to a turtle conservation where you might have the chance to see some sea turtles waddling about the beach or laying eggs. Campo is where you will go to gain entrance to Parc National de Campo. River trips, canopy walks, and hiking while you’re surrounded by lush green jungles and tons of wildlife will make for a wonderful day. The only downside to these two spots is the drive here, it’s not the easiest, but should be well worth it.
