1. Louisa May Alcott

The same as previous writers on our list of 6 female authors with male pen names, Louisa May Alcott also used a pseudonym to ensure success. The 19th-century author of Little Women signed her works with the name A.M. Barnard. She chose this ambiguous pen name in order to ensure more credibility when writing gothic thrillers with themes which were not considered to be suitable for a female writer of that time. Her most famous work, Little Women, was actually published under her own name, but her other works such as A Long Fatal Love Chase, and Behind a Mask, were signed by A.M. Barnard. Her male pen name was later discovered by two women, Madeleine B.Stern, a book dealer, and Leona Rostenberg, a librarian.
