5 States with the Highest Life Expectancy in the US

In this article we are going to list the 5 states with the highest life expectancy in the U.S. For a detailed coverage of this topic and a more comprehensive list please take a look at the 25 states with the highest life expectancy in the U.S.

5. Massachusetts

Life expectancy at birth in 2020: 79.0 years

While there is vast disparity between cities and even neighborhoods within cities such as Boston, overall Massachusetts ranks quite well in terms of life expectancy. The state is also home to some of the best education and healthcare systems in the entire country, both of which are very important metrics to prolonging life expectancy.

4. California

Life expectancy at birth in 2020: 79.0 years

It is unsurprising to see a state with a high social security rank having a high life expectancy, and one of the other potential reasons is a higher focus on diet and fitness as opposed to say, Southern states where food with fried food with high content is part of the culture.

3. Minnesota

Life expectancy at birth in 2020: 79.1 years

In Minnesota, like in the vast majority of states, females have a much higher life expectancy than males, even though Minnesotans have seen it fall from 80.5 years at the state’s peak. One of the potential reasons behind this is a lower crime rate, which as we discussed in the intro, can have a significant impact on a state’s life expectancy. Lower rates of premature death and infant mortality have also contributed to Minnesota ranking among the states with the highest life expectancy.

2. Washington

Life expectancy at birth in 2020: 79.2 years

The Pacific Northwest is a great place to be if you want to live a long life, as evidenced by Washington’s life expectancy. The biggest risks for a higher life expectancy in the state are alcohol and drug abuse, higher BMI and of course, tobacco use, including smoking.

1. Hawaii

Life expectancy at birth in 2020: 80.7 years

Topping the list of the 25 states with the highest life expectancy is the only state where life expectancy at birth is more than 80 years. Lower smoking rates in Hawaiians have led to a lower risk of heart disease and cancer while obesity is also relatively low, in a country where obesity is a massive problem.
