5 – Indiana

While Indiana is the 5th largest corn-producing state in the United States, its corn production decreased by 5% in 2022 compared to 2021. Corn produced in Indiana is used for producing biofuel and fiber materials such as plastic and carpet. A substantial part of corn produced in Indiana is also exported to other countries. Together, corn and soya beans make up 60% of Indiana’s agriculture. It is interesting that while Indiana has one of the highest yields per acre of corn, the planting window typically lasts for twenty days, from April 20 to May 10.

Illinois is the second largest corn-producing state in the United States, with an impressive yield of 202 bushels per acre. While 98% of the corn produced in Illinois is field corn, it is the third largest producer of flint corn which is used in making popcorn. 

An interesting fact about corn farms in Illinois is that 95% of them are owned by families. The ideal planting period of corn in Illinois is from late April to early May.
