5. American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG)

American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG) is known for almost going bankrupt during the Lehman crisis in 2008 and almost bringing down the entire U.S financial system. The company was ultimately bailed out by the government. American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG) changed the name of its commercial property/casualty operations to Chartis. It also re-branded its Life Insurance and Retirement solutions with the name SunAmerica in 2009. The company shunned using its own name due to the ignominy it faced from the government sponsored bailout. However, it made a name change back to American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG) in 2012, as it found higher response rates and lower customer acquisition costs for AIG-branded products. The name change also reflected the fact that American International Group Inc. (NYSE:AIG) had recovered from the grievous losses it suffered (both financially and reputation-wise) during the financial crisis.
