5. Central African Republic

The Central African Republic, as the name suggests, is a Central African country. It gained independence in 1958 and has one of the smallest economies in the world at $5.48 billion. It has been ruled by a military junta for a significant portion of its history, and has seen civil wars with rebel groups taking over portions of the country as well as failed coup attempts. Significant portions of the country continue to be controlled by armed groups.
4. Republic of South Sudan

The Republic of South Sudan is a landlocked Eastern African country. It gained independence from Sudan in 2005 and was recognized six years later in 2011. South Sudan has a $13.6 billion economy and a low GDP per capita of $934. South Sudan is one of the youngest members of the United Nations too and is in a constant state of war with armed groups within its territory. South Sudan also saw a civil war between 2013 and 2020, and elections that were initially to be held in 2015 have been delayed to 2024.
3. Syrian Arab Republic
Fragility Score: 108.4
Syria has seen consistent conflict for the past two decades, which erupted into a brutal civil war in 2011 that continues to devastate the country. Large swathes of the country are controlled by six different groups, apart from the Syrian Arab Republic itself. Despite a ceasefire announced in 2020, clashes still take place in Syria. Countries including the U.S., Turkey, and Russia have supported various factions, and Israel has conducted its own bombing raids. The war in Syria has made millions of people into refugees and killed hundreds of thousands of people.
2. Federal Republic of Somalia
Fragility Score: 110.5
The Federal Republic of Somalia is a coastal East African country. It gained independence from the British in 1961 but entered turmoil soon as its president was assassinated and a coup ensued. This resulted in over two decades of military rule which led to a civil war that led to another presidential assassination in a civil war that toppled the government. This was followed by a continued insurgency and multiple characterizations of Somalia as a failed state.

The Republic of Yemen is the second largest Arab country in Western Asia. Like Syria, large areas of Yemen are also controlled by different groups, and the civil war has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths in the country which includes tens of thousands of children.
