Roughly 400,000 individuals, or 6.6% of the population, in the Central African Republic (CAR) are acutely malnourished. Roughly 2.7 million people, or nearly half of the population of the CAR, experience acute food insecurity; of them, 642,000 are in the emergency phase and need immediate help to prevent starvation. The most susceptible groups are those under five years old, women who are pregnant or nursing, and those living with HIV/AIDS. 40 percent of young children already suffer from chronic malnutrition. In order to effectively treat malnutrition, Médecins d’Afrique improves access to water, sanitation, and hygiene while also providing critical aid, such as therapeutic meals like Plumpy’Nut.
