5 Most Homogeneous Countries in the World

In this article, we look at the 5 most homogenous countries in the world. If you would like to view our detailed analysis of how diversity impacts a country, you may look at the 25 Most Homogenous Countries in the World.

05. Italy

Value: 0.04

92% of the Italian population considers themselves to be ethnically Italian, and this identity holds a lot of significance for them. The interesting element about this region is that after the fall of the Roman Empire, Italy wasn’t unified again until 1861. Despite that, the people still identified themselves with the Italian identity in the years between. In addition to that, Southern Italy has been invaded by various ethnicities, and yet it continues to be one of most homogenous regions in the world.

04. Tunisia

Value: 0.039

98% of the Tunisian population is Arab or Arab-Berber. The country has seen a significant level of intermixing between these two ethnicities, so lines are often blurred, and it may be hard to distinguish. The 2010-11 Tunisian revolution resulted in a wave of activism for the indigenous population of Imazighen, which is another example of the element that some of the most homogenous countries may often marginalize their minority groups.

03. Japan

Value: 0.012

Japan is considered among the top ranks of the most homogenous countries in the world, with the population attaching a lot of pride and nationalism to this dynamic. While the country has contributed money for Indochinese refugees in other countries, it has barely settled them in its own space. Japanese leaders have also given public speeches where they mention that diversity creates confusion and even low levels of intellect, as reported by the Washington Post.

02. South Korea

Value: 0.004

99% of the South Korean population identifies with the Korean ethnicity, which is genetically the closest to Siberian and Mongolian groups. The largest minority in the country is Chinese individuals, who are only 20,000 in number. South Korean society places colossal importance on familial ties, but more and more experts are calling for the need to cultivate a diverse community as it may contribute to higher innovation in the country.

01. North Korea

Value: 0.002

North Korea is the least racially diverse country in Asia because it is almost entirely Korean, except for a few Chinese individuals. This won’t come as a surprise to many people because the country has been cut off from the rest of the world since 1945 and maintains a massive lack of diversity.
