5. Taiwan

The Republic of China, also known as Taiwan, is a 36,197 sq. kilometers sized island region that dominates the world of microprocessor chips. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) became the world leader in manufacturing chips after surpassing Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC) in 2017. Today, it is responsible for producing 90% of the world’s semiconductors that are used in quantum computing applications and artificial intelligence (AI). 

But TSMC is not the only global company in the country. Taiwan is also home to some top-ranked tech companies like Mediatek (TPE: 2454), Foxconn (TPE: 2354), and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. (OTCMKTS: HNHPF). Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. is also Apple’s primary manufacturing partner. It is ranked number 5th on the list of most advanced countries in computer technology, with 27,234 patents to its name between 2000 and 2020.

China also has the world’s largest economy, with its GDP being $27.02 trillion in terms of purchasing power parity. The country’s rise in the technological sector has been notably fast in the last decade, especially in areas like high-tech manufacturing. Between 2000 and 2020, Chinese investors saw 42,895 patents granted to their name.

Currently, China has different plans to grow its technological infrastructure and become a self-sufficient nation. Their main areas of focus are AI and semiconductor fabrication, with China being the largest AI research producer in the world today.

3. South Korea

2. United States of America

(NASDAQ: AAPL), Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), and QUALCOMM Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM). U.S. companies are also leaders in the field of quantum computing, with Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and IBM, having more than two thousand patents to their name – twice as many as China’s applications for the same area. America won 92,793 computer technology patents between 2000 and 2020.

Japan is an Asian Island country with the world’s fourth-largest economy with a GDP of US$4.2 trillion, and the 12th-largest population. It is a world leader in many domains, and technology — especially computer technology — is one of them. According to Data Pandas report, Japan had a Score of 80, which means it has a strong digital economy, substantial funding for venture capital, highly-developed technological infrastructure, and robust intellectual properties. 

When it comes to the computer tech industry, Japan holds a 10% share of the global market, with tech giants like Hitachi Ltd. (TYO: 6501), Toshiba Corporation, and Kyocera Corporation (TYO: 6971) being the leaders nationally and internationally. While the global tech market is getting more competitive, Japan continues to maintain its stronghold in the computer technology domain.
