5. Korea

Number of AI-related Patents in 2020: 15,191 

Korea is home to many companies and research institutions that are working on developing AI technologies and solutions. Some of the notable organizations in this field include the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), which has several leading AI research labs, and LG, a major global electronics company that is heavily invested in AI research and development. Korea is also home to a number of startups that are working on developing AI technologies, such as 42Maru and Movic Lab. In 2020, Korea registered 15,191 AI-related patents.

4. Germany

Number of AI-related Patents in 2020: 21,576

Germany has a strong reputation for being a leader in the field of AI, and it is home to several leading academic institutions and companies that are working on developing advanced AI technologies. Some of the notable organizations in this field include the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), which is one of the largest and most respected AI research institutions in the world, and SAP, a major global software company that is heavily invested in AI research and development. Additionally, Germany is home to a number of large international tech companies that are active in the AI space, such as Siemens and Bosch. 

3. China

Number of AI-related Patents in 2020: 29,719

China has made significant progress in the field of artificial intelligence in recent years, and it is quickly becoming a major player in the global AI landscape. The country has a large and growing technology industry, and many Chinese companies and research institutions are working on developing AI technologies and solutions. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, China secured 29,853 AI-related patents in 2022. 

Some of the notable AI organizations in China include Baidu, which is the most dominant internet search engine company in the country and has a strong focus on AI research and development, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which has several leading AI research labs. Additionally, China is home to a number of startups that are working on developing AI technologies, such as SenseTime and Bytedance.

Standing at number two on our list, the United States has a long history of leadership in the field of artificial intelligence, and it continues to be at the forefront of AI research and development. The country is home to many of the world’s leading AI research institutions and companies, and it has made significant contributions to the field in areas such as natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning. Some of the most notable organizations in the US AI space include Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL), which has a strong focus on AI research and development and owns the leading AI research lab DeepMind (UK), and OpenAI, which is a non-profit AI research organization funded by some of the biggest names in technology. Additionally, the US is home to many of the world’s leading academic institutions in the field of AI, such as Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Many products within the US use artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and the field is constantly evolving. Some of the most notable examples of AI-powered products include virtual personal assistants such as Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN)’s Alexa and Google Assistant, which use natural language processing and machine learning to understand and respond to user requests; self-driving cars, which use AI to navigate roads and make driving decisions; and medical diagnostic systems, which use AI to analyze medical images and diagnose diseases. Topping the list, Japan is currently the most advanced country in artificial intelligence according to our evaluation. Out of the 182,885 AI-related patents secured globally in 2020, Japan had a share of 44,513 patents. 

Not only does it have a strong reputation for its advancements in AI, but it is also a leading country in the Robotics field. As of 2024, the country has a large number of companies and research institutions that are working on developing AI technologies, and it has made significant strides in areas such as natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning. 

Some of the most notable companies in the Japanese AI space include NEC, which is a pioneer in the field of AI and has developed many advanced AI technologies, and Fujitsu, which is heavily invested in AI research and development and uses AI to develop a wide range of products and services. Japan is also home to a number of leading academic institutions that are at the forefront of AI research, such as the University of Tokyo and the University of Tsukuba.
