Population in 2022 (million): 0.91

South Dakota has a pretty low population density considering it is the 5th least populated state in America and the 16th largest state in the United States. As of 2022, South Dakota has a population of 0.91 million and a land area of 77,047 square miles. In 2021, South Dakota had a GDP of $49 billion.

4. North Dakota

Population in 2022 (million): 0.78

North Dakota produced 431 million barrels of oil in 2021, ranking second among all states in terms of oil production. According to the EIA, only Texas produced more with 1.8 billion barrels for the year. In terms of population, North Dakota is one of the least populated states with 0.78 million residents in 2022.

3. Alaska

Population in 2022 (million): 0.73

Although it is the largest state in the US in terms of land area, Alaska is one of the least populated given its population of 0.73 million people in 2022.
