1. New Bilibid Prison

Number of Total Inmates: 28,500

New Bilibid Prison was established in 1940 in Muntinlupa, Philippines. NBP was formerly used as an internment camp to house military personnel and civilians during the Japanese occupation.

The prison was designed for a total inmate capacity of 6,345 inmates but is currently overcrowded with 28,500 inmates. It is the primary maximum security prison in the country and serves as the central location for the detention of convicted dangerous criminals. In recent years, the NBP has been in the news for the discovery of illegal drugs, weapons, and other contraband within the prison, as well as reports of corruption and human rights violations.
