5. Hermès

Founded in 1837, Hermes is currently 183 years old, and is the go to name for luxury products. Among its many offerings are lifestyle accessories, leather, home furnishings, jewelry, perfume, handbags and watches, among other products. The company had revenues of nearly 7 billion euros in 2019, while employing over 14,000 people. It is perhaps most famous for its Hermes Birkin bags, named after the English actress Jane Birkin, which costs thousands of pounds, is a status symbol for the rich and famous, and actually has a waiting list of several years. It currently has a minimum price of $11,000 while the maximum can go up to $380,000.

Total is the largest oil and gas company in France, and is one of the largest companies in the world in terms of revenue as well. It is involved in every department of the oil and gas industry, from exploration and extraction to production, marketing and trading. In fact, there might just be a Total gas station a few blocks from your house if you live in a main city. In 2019, it had revenues of just over $200 billion while employing over 107,000 people worldwide. Its assets on the other hand, top $273 billion.

3. Sanofi (NASDAQ:SNY)

Sanofi is a pharma giant headquartered in Paris and is one of the biggest biotech companies in the world. In fact, it is the largest vaccines manufacturer in the world, and has currently partnered with GSK to find a cure for the Covid-19 vaccine. In fact, it along with GSK has signed an agreement with the US government under Operation Warp Speed to provide the country with 100 million doses of the vaccine if one is successful for a total of $2.1 billion. However, it is lagging behind other companies in this regard with companies such as Pfizer and AstraZeneca announcing successful results from their trials.

2. L’Oréal

L’Oréal is the largest cosmetics company in the world and is active in 160 countries with over 90,000 employees across the globe. It has several categories within the cosmetics business which include skin care, hair color, hair care products, sun protection, perfume and of course, make-up. The company was founded in 1909, 111 years ago and is headquartered in Clichy, France. In 2019, its revenues touched nearly 30 billion euros while it boasted assets of 43.8 billion euros.  Some of the most famous brands of the company include L’Oréal Paris and Maybelline. The company has been at the center of several controversies since its inception, with its founder being a Nazi sympathizer among many other issues.

1. LVMH

Think of LVMH and you think of luxury and class, which has enable the company to easily top the list of 15 largest French companies by market cap. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton was only formed in 1987 through the merger of Louis Vitton and Moët Hennessy, but its history is actually much older and much more significant. Moët Hennessy itself was formed in 1971 after the merger of Moët & Chandon, and cognac maker Hennessy. Moët & Chandon was established in 1743, and is an incredible 277 years old, and still one of the largest wine producers in the world. In fact, one of its oldest brands is Château d’Yquem, which traces its origins back to the 16th century.

LVMH has divided its businesses into six distinct branches which encompass 60 subsidiaries and are namely Perfume and Cosmetics, Wine and Spirits, Fashion Group, Selective Distribution, Watches and Jewelry and Other Activities. In fact, its wine and spirits business is big enough to enable it to claim a place among the largest beverage companies in the world. In 2019, it had revenues of nearly 54 billion euros while its assets topped 128 billion euros and has around 130,000 employees across the world.
