In this article, we look at the 5 countries with the most military satellites in orbit. You can read about the military purposes served by satellites and America’s dominance in the field of space technology by heading over to our article, 15 Countries with the Highest Number of Military Satellites in Orbit, where we have also shed light on how satellites with missile warning technologies are helping keeping countries safe.

Military Satellites: 102

Russia is a major player in space technology along with China in rivaling the United States. In 2022 alone, Moscow launched 14 military satellites, according to Jamestown Foundation, which included navigation satellites, intelligence satellites, reconnaissance satellites, and optical-imaging satellites. The frequency of launches was higher due to the war in Ukraine. While the Russians have several space communication assets, many of its navigation systems have become outdated and face degradation.

Military Satellites: 125

The Chinese, helped with new and better satellites, are increasingly beginning to project their military power deep into the Pacific and in particular threaten Taiwan. China is fast catching up on the United States in space technology as well, and is at the same level today that the U.S. was 10-15 years ago according to defense experts. In 2022, Beijing launched more than 200 satellites into orbit for both civilian and military use. An estimated 125 satellites are completely dedicated to military use as per the Power Atlas.
