The world’s third-largest economy offers an ideal demographic – health-conscious, aging consumers with abundant disposable income and a bottomless appetite for supplements that promise to balm their ills. But Japan also has some of the most restrictive cannabis laws in East Asia, a region known for its intolerance of drugs. Only 2% of the Japanese have reported using marijuana. 

However, CBD is legal in Japan and has been sold in the country since 2013. As the substance is becoming increasingly popular, analysts estimate that the Japanese legal cannabis industry could be worth $800 million by 2024.
