The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was set up in 2004 and in less than two decades has become one of the world’s busiest airports by flight traffic. The 2004 expansion came after the old airport, which was set up in 1932 was unable to handle large amounts of traffic due to its location. Since 2004, the airport’s passenger and flight traffic has consistently grown each year except in 2021 and 2022 as China dealt with the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent Zero Covid policy that sapped economic activity.
