Ah, the Lamborghini of mobile phones releases a luxury flagship phone year after year, while also reducing accessories with the latest phone coming without a charge, a move which other companies which made fun of Apple are now adapting. The company may have been established in the 70s, but was stagnating back when it released the first iPhone and hasn’t looked back since, becoming the most valuable company in the entire world. However, it has suffered as compared to the previous year and the release of the iPhone 12 has not been able to quell the issue.

2. Huawei

Total number of units shipped in Q3 of 2020 (in millions of units): 50.9

Share of the market in Q3 of 2020: 14%

Huawei is the most controversial company in our list, and is also one of the biggest employee owned companies in the world, even though this is also disputed by many since there is a lack of transparency in this regard. Huawei has been accused of providing products which enables the Chinese to spy on Western countries, claims which Huawei has strenuously denied. Despite these accusations, the restrictions in trade that followed and the fact that the company’s CFO has been arrested in Canada, Huawei has a strong presence in around 170 countries across the world, and has revenue of more than $100 billion. The company has close to 200,000 employees and managed to hold on to second place despite a significant decline of 2% year on year. Even quarter on quarter, the company declined by 7% which shows that it may not be easy to go through these hard times.

1. Samsung

Total number of units shipped in Q3 of 2020 (in millions of units): 79.8

Share of the market in Q3 of 2020: 22%

Topping the list of the 5 biggest phone companies in the world is undoubtedly Samsung, who shipped nearly 30 million units more than its closest competitor in Huawei. Samsung has been at the forefront in the electronics department and has consistently stayed on top of the smartphone industry as well. While Apple has provided serious competition through the past decade to Samsung, and now Huawei and Xiaomi are in the mix as well, but Samsung has held off the competition mainly thanks to its flagship S Series as well as its flagship Note Series. However, unlike Apple, Samsung doesn’t limit itself to one flagship one a year. Apart from these two flagship series, the company also unveiled a foldable phone which costs more than $2,000. Apart from this, the company also introduces mid-range phones that cost between $200 – $500 and provide excellent features for a suitable price. Samsung, unlike most phone companies, actually saw a very slight growth year on year in Q3, at 2% and had a really strong quarter on quarter growth of 47%. It will truly take some seismic activity to take over from Samsung as the number one phone company in the world.
